Super Bowl swaps single-use plastic for aluminum cups at concession stands

Football fans watching the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers face off during Sunday’s Super Bowl inside Hard Rock Stadium in Miami will be sipping from aluminum cups instead of single-use plastic.

The stadium will be replacing disposable plastic cups with 50,000 aluminum ones that are easier to recycle.

“We’re excited to be working with likeminded partners to put sustainable solutions in the hands of football fans on this amazing stage,” Anheuser-Busch’s Adam Warrington said in a statement. “Bud Light has a storied history of celebrating NFL moments and we hope this will be the first of many occasions they can enjoy it from an infinitely recyclable cup.”

The move was made in conjunction with stadium concessionaire Centerplate Inc.Bud Light and the Ball Corporation.

Centerplate senior vice president of marketing Diana Evans told Bloomberg that the company and the Miami Dolphins invested $500,000 in their attempt to replace 99.4 percent of single-use plastic at the stadium this year.

“We’re able to move aggressively in Miami because we have so much client support and it’s something that really unites people being so close to the water and the ocean,” Evans said. “I think that this is going to take a couple of years to roll out through the entire system.”
