Suns’ Chris Paul won’t play for Team USA in Olympics: USA Basketball official

(Editor’s note: An earlier version of this story said Chris Paul would accept an invite. Team USA tells The Athletic that he has declined an invitation. We apologize for the error.)

Phoenix Suns All-Star guard Chris Paul has opted against committing to Team USA for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, a USA Basketball official told The Athletic.

Paul, 36, had previously played with Team USA in 2008 and 2012, winning gold medals both times. Khris Middleton, Kevin Durant and James Harden recently committed to join Team USA for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Warriors All-Star Steph Curry and Jazz All-Star Donovan Mitchell both opted out of competing in Tokyo.

The point guard averaged 16.4 points, 8.9 assists and 4.5 rebounds for the Suns this season. Phoenix currently leads the Los Angeles Clippers 1-0 in the Western Conference Finals, despite Paul missing Game 1 while in health and safety protocols.
