This weekend’s Ohio Derby winner Owendale, previously third in the G1 Preakness Stakes, will return to Grade 1 company for his next start, reports bloodhorse.com. The 3-year-old’s potential targets include the Haskell (July 20 at Monmouth), the Travers (Aug. 24 at Saratoga), and/or the Pennsylvania Derby (Sept. 21 at Parx), according to trainer Brad Cox.
Prior to his major Preakness effort, Owendale was impressive in winning the G3 Lexington Stakes at Keeneland.
“Before the Lexington he was really starting to move forward and turning it up in his training, more aggressive,” Cox said. “We actually added a shadow roll to him he’s been running in since the Lexington. I’m not saying it’s the shadow roll—it certainly hasn’t hurt him—but he’s really moved forward since late March. I guess you could say the beginning of spring he really took off and started developing and just became a bigger, stronger, faster horse.”
