Steve Grogan has been in Cam Newton’s shoes before. He likes what he sees now


Cam Newton and Steve Grogan have been linked for part of the past decade, but never more than now.

Newton, who made his Patriots debut Sunday in a 21-11 victory against the Dolphins, is the franchise’s most talented running quarterback since Grogan manned the position from 1975-90.

So naturally, Grogan has been eager to pay close attention to the way the Patriots’ offense evolved with Newton running the show.

“That was one of the things I thought about,” Grogan told The Athletic. “I was kind of interested to see – after having Tom Brady, who was such a great passer but didn’t run much at all – how they would evolve their offense to fit Cam Newton’s abilities. I’m sure it’s been a challenge for Josh McDaniels, but he seems to have done a really good job of figuring ways to use (Newton) with his legs and still have the passing offense they had under Brady and to let Cam (also) run…
