Steve Clarke was too cautious and loyal — Scotland crave creativity


As reunions go, this was a harsh reminder to Scotland of how brutal football can be at this level. First, they were robbed of arguably the one irreplaceable player in Kieran Tierney, who missed out injured. Then, just as they were building momentum and a goal felt the equaliser was coming, Czech Republic striker Patrick Schick scored a freak goal from just inside the Scotland half to make it 2-0 and kill the game.

The ball travelled 49.7 yards and spent just over three seconds in the air, making it the furthest distance from which a goal has been scored on record at the European Championship. If the other centre-forward on the pitch, Lyndon Dykes, had spent less time off the ground then Scotland may have got more out of the game.
