Stefanos Tsitsipas opens up on Roger Federer relationship ahead of Swiss Indoors battle

Stefanos Tsitsipas has spoken out about the time he spent with Roger Federer at the Laver Cup and the impact it has had on him.

Last month, Tsitsipas competed at the Laver Cup for the first time and played alongside Federer and Rafael Nadal for Team Europe.

The event created a host of memorable moments including Tsitsipas receiving coaching advice from Federer and Nadal.

The Greek, who has made a real impact on the ATP Tour over the last 18 months, won a singles match but lost both of his doubles when partnered with Federer and Nadal.

Nevertheless, the event has clearly had an influence on Tsitsipas as he has won 10 of his last 12 matches since then and on Saturday, he plays Federer for a place in the Swiss Indoors final.

Speaking after beating Serbian Filip Krajinovic, Tsitsipas was asked about his experience of being with Federer and revealed the impression it made on him.

Tsitsipas said: “I was able to deepen his personality. He’s a great guy with whom you can have interesting conversations.

“I learned from him as much as I could. The Laver Cup has been a great experience for most players: to be able to share the same court, to be part of the same team. it is very pleasant.

“This is one of the big events of the year and it unites the players.”

The head-to-head between Tsitsipas and Federer stands at 1-1 after two entertaining matches this year.

In January, Tsitsipas caused an upset when he beat Federer at the Australian Open but the 38-year-old got revenge in the Dubai Tennis Championship final.

And Tsitsipas says he will have to manage a partisan crowd when he takes on Federer.

“I think it will be a different match from that in Australia,” he said.

“He plays at home [and] he will have the full support of the public.

“I have to focus on my own game, do not think too much about everything around. It will be very difficult, I must be calm and positive.”
