Stefanos Tsitsipas opens up on Citi Open doubles partnership with Nick Kyrgios

On the back of early exits at Wimbledon earlier this month, Tsitsipas and Kyrgios will play with each other for the first time in the men’s doubles draw.

Tsitsipas was bitterly disappointed at his defeat in the first round at Wimbledon and will be hoping to build some confidence this week in Washington.

While Kyrgios, who lost to Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon, lost in the first round of the doubles last week in Atlanta.

But the pair have surprisingly made the decision to play with each other at the Citi Open.

Earlier this year, Kyrgios spoke of his desire to one day play with Tsitsipas and he will now have his chance.

But Kyrgios and Tsitsipas have been handed a brutal draw with top seeds and Wimbledon champions Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah lying in wait in the first round.

The doubles draw is packed with talent with the Bryan brothers, Jack Sock returning to action and Jamie Murray and Andy Murray playing together.

But all eyes will be on Tsitsipas and Kyrgios when they play later today.

And Tsitsipas spoke about their similarities and his decision to partner up with Kyrgios.

“I decided to play doubles with him,” he told reporters.

“He’s known for playing pretty good doubles and I thought having the opportunity to play a little bit before my singles as well would help me get used to the conditions faster.

“Our similarities, we do have probably aggressive mindsets on the court.”

“We both like to be aggressive and in charge of the point. He likes to come to the net. It is not his strongest point but he feels comfortable doing it. Returns are pretty good, we are both tall guys, good serves.

“I guess character-wise [we are] different.

“But I think we both share lots of things in common so that’s why I also decided to play with him.”
