Stars 20/20: Great stories don’t always have happy endings


The Dallas Stars lost Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final 2-0 to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Monday, losing the series four games to two.

1. A year ago, to the day, the Dallas Stars played their final preseason game of the 2019-20 season. It was an innocent enough 4-3 shootout win against the Colorado Avalanche.

Twelve months later the Stars were still playing.

In between, we saw one of the craziest seasons in franchise history.

The Stars had a horrendous start. They were 1-7-1 in the first nine games, but recovered and turned into one of the NHL’s best teams. In December they let go of their head coach because of unprofessional conduct. Many players to this day still aren’t completely sure what Jim Montgomery did to have the remainder of his contract voided.

But 21 days later, the Stars were opening 2020 in the Winter Classic in front of more than 86,000 people in the Cotton Bowl. They won that game. It was a moment in franchise…
