Stanley Johnson lining up with OG Anunoby to give Raptors 1-2 defensive punch


Stanley Johnson put his arms straight up in the air. On the basketball court, you generally see that stance only when a player is trying to play clean vertical defence at the rim. Off the court, it is used when you are trying to prove that you are not a threat. When Johnson did it, he was nowhere near the rim.

He was near the top of the key defending Mavericks superstar Luka Doncic. It is a result of the way James Harden has changed basketball over the past few years. Part of Harden’s offensive repertoire is to stick his arms all the way out, and yet somehow avoid turning the ball over. Instead, he frequently brings his arms up into a defender and usually finds himself shooting free throws as a result. Doncic has picked up a few tricks from the former MVP. Whether it is with his arms or just his remarkable footwork, Doncic finds ways to get his body into his defenders.
