Stan Van Gundy hire shows Pelicans’ present matters just as much as their future


It was a long and arduous process, but the Pelicans finally got their guy.

More than two months after firing Alvin Gentry, New Orleans completed its lengthy search for a new head coach by picking a name very few people predicted when this process started: Stan Van Gundy.

The Pelicans interviewed nine candidates during their search, according to team sources, and gathered intel on others in hopes of finding the right fit for one of the NBA’s most intriguing rosters.

The amount of thought put into the hire fits into what we’ve come to expect from the measured approach executive vice president of basketball operations David Griffin has taken in most of his decisions since joining the Pelicans in April 2019. It also puts further emphasis on how important it was for Griffin and his staff to get this right.
