Sport24.co.za | Woods, Koepka and McIlroy not in Tournament of Champions field

Cape Town – The PGA Tour has revealed the reduced field for its opening event of 2020, the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Maui.

While World No 1 Brooks Koepka, World No 2 Rory McIlroy and Masters champion turned Presidents Cup hero Tiger Woods are not in the 34-player field, the likes of Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas and Dustin Johnson are.

Woods’ absence is no real surprise, considering he hasn’t played at Kapalua since 2005. In recent years, he has frequently failed to qualify to for the tournament, which features only winners on the PGA Tour from the previous season, but he was eligible to play this time around by virtue of his Masters victory.

Woods is instead expected to make his 2020 debut in the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines from January 23-26.

Koepka, meanwhile, has not played since withdrawing from the CJ Cup in October with a knee injury, which also kept him out of the Presidents Cup.

McIlroy was in the field in Maui last time around, but has opted against making the trip this time.

Other eligible players who have decided to skip Kapalua include Open champion Shane Lowry, Phil Mickelson and Justin Rose.

Joining the likes of Rahm, Thomas and Johnson in the field are US Open champion Gary Woodland and defending champion Xavier Schauffele.

The tournament begins Thursday on the Plantation Course at Kapalua.

The full field:

Patrick Cantlay, Paul Casey, Cameron Champ, Corey Conners, Tyler Duncan, Rickie Fowler, Dylan Frittelli, Lanto Griffin, Jim Herman, J.B. Holmes, Max Homa, Dustin Johnson, Sung Kang, Kevin Kisner, Matt Kuchar, Nate Lashley, Adam Long, Graeme McDowell, Keith Mitchell, Collin Morikawa, Sebastian Munoz, Kevin Na, Joaquin Niemann, Ryan Palmer, J.T. Poston, Jon Rahm, Chez Reavie, Patrick Reed, Xander Schauffele, Justin Thomas, Brendon Todd, Martin Trainer, Matthew Wolff and Gary Woodland.
