Cape Town – Golfing superstar Tiger Woods has paid tribute to basketball legend Kobe Bryant who was killed in a helicopter crash on Sunday.

Bryant, along with one of his four daughters, Gianna, were killed when the former NBA star’s helicopter crashed in Calabasas in California.

All nine passengers on board the flight died at the scene.

Interviewed after his final round at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines only 225km from the crash site, Woods said he only heard the news walking off the 18th green.

Woods did mention he was unsure as to why the gallery were shouting “Do it for Mamba”.

“The Black Mamba” was the nickname of Bryant’s during his playing days. He also published a book called The Mamba Mentality.

Woods, a life-long Los Angeles Lakers fan – the team Bryant shone for for 20 years – finished in a tie for ninth-place.
