Sport24.co.za | Was 2019 Rory McIlroy's best ever season?

Cape Town – Rory McIlroy completed a consistent
season with a victory at the Tour Championship on Sunday, capping off
one of his best seasons ever.

In fact, there is an argument to be made that the 2018/2019 PGA Tour
season actually is his best season. Of course, it depends on the metric
you use, but McIlroy is at the top of many this season.

Overall, the Northern Irishman finished in the Top 10 no less than
14 times in his 19 starts for the year. Combine that with his three
victories, one of which was the season-long FedEx Cup whose $15 million
prize was the largest ever in golf’s history, and it’s a superlative
season.

The statistics on the PGA Tour support this, as McIlroy finished top
of the Tour in scoring average, strokes gained and Top 10 finishes and
was second to Cameron Champ for average driving distance by four yards.

One sterling stat is the strokes gained per round – 2.55 – meaning
that on average, McIlroy was two and half shots better per round than
the field. The only man with a higher number than that in history is
Tiger Woods.

But he knows that…

“The Holy Grail is three,” quipped Mcilroy on pgatour.com.

“I’m not going to stop until I get to three because Tiger has done
that multiple seasons, and when you get to three strokes gained, you’re
just in another league. That’s what I strive towards.”

McIlroy also equalled his career lowest round with a sizzling 61 to win the Canadian Open that could have easily been a 59.

While it was a major-less year for the McIlroy – with best finishes
of T8 at the PGA and T9 at the US Open – he did become just the second
man from the UK to win the Players Championship, often dubbed by players
and pundits as the ‘fifth major’.
