Cape Town – Justin Thomas admits that the pressure is on to gain vital points in the FedEx Cup race.
The 2017 FedEx Cup champion won five times that year – including his maiden major at the PGA – to clinch the most lucrative prize in golf. However, Thomas is winless in 2019.
Despite this, some consistent golf of late sees the American sitting in 17th place on FedEx Cup rankings. Five top ten finishes in just 15 events is good going and Thomas is happy he is “trending” this way.
“Every event’s very important over the course of the entire year, but it definitely is now because you’re running out (of time)… I really feel like I’m trending in the right direction,” the 26-year-old told PGA Tour website.
“Had two really positive weeks at the Scottish and then The Open last week. Felt like easily could have gotten a couple top-5s out of those two weeks … I feel like I’m very, very close to winning again.
“I’ve been saying that all year, but got my putter, I feel like, kind of back, a lot closer to where I would like it.
“I still have a lot of positives to show from this year and we have four or five really big events left in the season on golf courses that I feel like can suit my game if I’m playing well. We could have another great end of the season.”
Thomas will be looking to back up his T11 at the Scottish Open and a T9 at The Open Championship when he tees off at TPC Southwind for the WGC St. Jude Invitational on Thursday.
