Cape Town – Adam Scott won’t rule out competing at the 2020 Olympics despite being against the idea that the sport returned to the global event.
With his victory on Sunday at the Australian PGA breaking a four-year title drought, the Australian is ranked 13th in the official world rankings and has all but locked up a spot in the Olympics that will take place in Tokyo next year.
The 39-year-old, however, was heavily criticized after he decided to skip 2016 Olympic Games in Rio as golf made it’s return to the showpiece after a 112-year absence.
Scott had said at the time he would give the Games a miss due to scheduling concerns.
After his victory at Royal Pines on Sunday though, Scott did not rule out playing at next year’s Games: “I’m just going to take my time and see; I mean, I’ve made it clear it’s not my priority, but I wouldn’t rule it out.
“You always have to stay open minded; I just don’t want to hastily say ‘no’ or be silly based off more emotion.
“I know it is going to be a very successful event in Japan because the Japanese love golf.”
Scott though has in the past questioned why golf was part of the Olympics, telling the Australian Associated Press three weeks ago: “I still question strongly why (the Olympics are) there; I don’t see the need.
“It was incredibly disappointing that it was just a 72-hole stroke (play event); I think there could have been so much done with it.
“I don’t think we’re getting the most out of it, for a sport that is certainly not struggling at the professional level.”
