Cape Town – Newly-appointed Black Leopards coach Cavin Johnson is under no illusions as to the magnitude of the task at hand after being hired on a one-and-a-half-year deal.
Leopards are just three points above the relegation zone and have had three different managers this season. Lionel Soccoia resigned five games in to the new season with Luc Eymael taking charge.
But after Eymael resigned at the end of last week, Johnson was named as his successor just 48 hours later on Sunday morning. Johnson has already been sacked this season from his role as AmaZulu head coach.
The 61-year-old tactician will need to stabilise things at Lidoda Duvha with plenty of changing of the backroom staff having taken place in the last two years.
“It’s a good thing, I’ve been looking for a new challenge and this here is the next challenge, so let’s see if we can do it. It’s a one-and-a-half-year deal,” Johnson told KickOff.
“It’s difficult hey, it’s a different challenge but it’s worth a try. I’m a different person and I don’t want to judge a book by the cover; I want to first read the book.”
With the January transfer window on the horizon, Johnson first wants to have a good look at his squad before delving in to the market.
“No, I don’t need new signings. I think it’s important to give everybody an opportunity, and let’s see what happens. It’s too early to say, ‘I want this; I want that,’” added the former Platinum Stars, SuperSport United and Usuthu mentor.
“We’ll see what happens. Let’s see what we can achieve. There’s no mandate, it’s just about coming together and making it happy again, and we’ll see what happens.”
