Spider-Man: Far From Home Has Already Gotten Off To A Great Start In China

Following the climactic events of Avengers: Endgame, Peter Parker takes a much needed, but ultimately unrelaxing, trip to Europe in Spider-Man: Far From Home. While the film will find Spidey far from New York in countries like England, in the real world, his latest movie is now playing even farther from home. Spider-Man: Far From Home is already playing in China, where it has gotten off to a great start.

Spider-Man: Far From Home officially dropped into Chinese theaters on June 28 and it is estimated to have made $35.5 million opening day, according to Deadline. That includes $3.2 million the film pulled in from Thursday midnight screenings. That $35.5 million start also puts Far From Home on track for a $100+ million opening weekend in the Middle Kingdom.

This is a great start for the Infinity Saga capper and the $35.5 million opening day is the best ever for a Sony film in China, beating out last year’s Venom. Additionally, Spider-Man: Far From Home now holds the record for the best ever opening for a standalone superhero movie in China. It’s also the third-best debut for a superhero film period, trailing only the team-up films Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

For comparison, Spider-Man: Homecoming, which was no slouch, opened in China to $67 million in its first weekend, a number Far From Home should easily pass on its way to the $100 million neighborhood. Homecoming finished out its Middle Kingdom run with $116.3 million overall, which Far From Home should also swing past.

Pre-sales initially led to somewhat conservative weekend projections for the film in China, and there was some concern that Homecoming didn’t hit as big as it could because the American high school experience so present in the film isn’t something Chinese audiences could relate to, but it doesn’t appear that will hold back Far From Home.

Avengers: Endgame was the biggest import ever in the Chinese market, earning $629 million in its run and the proximity of Spider-Man: Far From Home to that titanic film can only help it. Beyond that, Spider-Man films have been playing in China since 2002, the character is quite popular there and Far From Home won’t face much in the way of local competition.

The reception for the latest adventure featuring Tom Holland’s Web-Slinger also paints a rosy picture. The film is enjoying positive reviews (as it is here) and great social scores leading to good word of mouth in the country, which bodes well for its potential.

Alongside China, Japan and Hong Kong are the only other overseas markets enjoying Spider-Man: Far From Home this weekend, with other territories getting their chance to see how The Infinity Saga ends starting next week. Domestically, the Jon Watts-directed film debuts on July 2 and is tracking to open with a fantastic $150-$180 million.
