Soyuncu setback could leave Leicester light in defence


There was light at the end of the tunnel for Brendan Rodgers as Leicester City travelled to Ukraine for their Europa League tie against Zorya Luhansk but, as they make the considerably shorter journey up to Yorkshire this weekend to face Sheffield United, that beaming outlook has been slightly dimmed.

The return from injury of Caglar Soyuncu, Ricardo Pereira and Wilfred Ndidi was seen as the cavalry coming over the hillside to provide much-needed reinforcements in the nick of time. In the absence of three key players, his depleted squad had held the fort well, but in recent weeks they were getting down to their last bullet.

All three played a key role in shoring up Leicester’s rearguard last season and in full-back Pereira, they have been missing a key attacking weapon, but with Soyuncu now set to face a further stint on the sidelines after breaking down at Zorya within 15 minutes of his comeback, Rodgers appears to have lost much more than just a single…
