He was denied once by Alex McCarthy, saw his appeals for a penalty fall on deaf ears and then needed lengthy treatment after an accidental but painful-looking clash with Mohammed Salisu.

Bamford was then jeered when he re-entered the pitch and then cemented his place as the pantomime villain when he scored, celebrating smugly in front of the home fans.

There were just over 8,000 of them inside St Mary’s and the extra percentage supporters provide appeared evident in Southampton’s lively start.

They had an added spring in their step and intensity in their hassling of Leeds and forward raids.

Che Adams had a header from Stuart Armstrong’s cross acrobatically tipped behind, Theo Walcott, whose permanent switch to Southampton was confirmed earlier in the day, rounded Kiko Casilla but saw his cross cleared and Armstrong also fired over.

Leeds, renowned for their own high-energy approach took a while to get to grips with Southampton’s.

Their first attempt did not arrive until Stuart Dallas dragged a volley wide in the 24th minute.

The first-half pattern soon resumed though.

Adams extended Casilla a second time with a snapshot from the edge of the box before Nathan Tella reacted just too late to James Ward-Prowse’s corner, the ball beating Leeds’s keeper but hitting the youngster and flying over.

Ward-Prowse was next to go close for Southampton just a couple of minutes after the restart, clipping the angle of post and bar with a trademark dipping, curling free-kick.

The action then swung to the other end and Southampton had McCarthy to thank for keeping the scores level.

Who flung himself full length to his right to brilliantly finger-tip Dallas’s volley wide and then stood firm to deny Patrick Bamford from a narrow angle.

Bamford’s next sight of goal was an even better one. Raphinha put the Leeds striker away, he rounded McCarthy, was clipped but stayed on his feet, and Jannik Vestegaard got back to snuff out the danger.

Bamford and Leeds appealed, claiming the contact was enough to warrant a penalty but referee Peter Bankes waved them away.

Leeds continued to enjoy the better moments as the game headed for the final quarter.

Jack Stephens got back just in time to head Raphinha’s header off the line and McCarthy scrambled back into position too to keep out Ezgjan Alioski’s follow up.

With 17 minutes to go, Leeds got their reward. Raphinha chipped a ball over Southampton’s backline and Bamford got their just ahead of a hesitant McCarthy to squeeze the ball between the keeper’s legs, surviving an offside VAR check before the goal was given.

Roberts doubled Leeds’s lead with one minute left, slotting home after McCarthy had kept out another attempt from Bamford.
