Social media ablaze with David Marshall memes after Euro 2020 match with Czech Republic and Scotland

Social media compares Scotland’s David Marshall to a Spider-Man victim, SpongeBob SquarePants and a basketball player trying to stop Michael Jordan after his dive to try and deny Patrik Schick’s wonder strike

Social media has been ablaze with memes in the aftermath of Czech Republic’s 2-0 victory against Scotland at Euro 2020 after David Marshall was left helplessly scrambling to try and save Patrik Schick’s incredible strike.

The Scotland goalkeeper was caught out by a sensational goal from Schick in the second half of the clash at Hampden Park. The Czech forward latched on to a pass and shot from narrowly over the halfway line after seeing that the keeper was far off his line.

Marshall sprinted back as fast as he could but his last ditch dive was in vain and he went careering into the net along with the ball.

In the hours that have followed, social media users have been at their inventive best in creating memes about the incident.

One amusing post, using the picture of Marshall in the goal net, joked that Spider-Man had managed to get him tangled up in his web. Another user mocked up a picture of firemen trying to cut Marshall free.

Another user compared his leap to save the ball to a basketball player trying to stop Michael Jordan scoring a slam-dunk. A similar sporting comparison saw someone else photoshop Marshal leaping over the finish line ahead of Usain Bolt in a 100m race.

Elsewhere, a French football fan showed joked Marshall was closing in on a long jump record alongside their own photo-shopped image.

Speaking in the aftermath of the game, the Czech hero Schick said he had noticed earlier in the match that Marshall had been coming far off his line.

‘I saw him [off his line], I checked in the first half when this situation would come,’ Schick told BBC Sport. ‘I was checking where he was standing.’

The Czechs ended up defeat Scotland 2-0. They face Croatia on Friday while Scotland need to brush themselves off before facing England at Wembley on the same day.

Back in November, Marshall’s penalty saves in a shoot-out with Serbia saw Scotland qualify for the Euros, their first major tournament since 1998.

A repeat of those shot-stopping heroics against England is the ultimate chance for him to redeem himself.
