Ralph Strangis always valued his health. But a trip to the doctor’s office this summer brought on newfound respect for the 59-year-old former voice of the Dallas Stars.

Strangis had issues with his bladder for a while and felt something was amiss about six months ago. He was right: On July 30, doctors removed a 2.2 centimeter stone the size of a golf ball from his bladder. Five days later, on Aug. 4, doctors informed Strangis of something more. He had early-stage bladder cancer.

“Somebody tells you that you have cancer — even if it’s not like Stage 4, ‘Oh my gosh, you’ve got a year to live’ — it’s still troubling,” Strangis said by phone from his home in Palm Springs, California. “At the beginning, I got a little scared, but very quickly, my default position is, “Alright, what do I got to do?’ I don’t wallow in self-pity much.
