‘Sky’s the limit’: Twins hope renewed dedication has Lewis Thorpe back on track

FORT MYERS, Fla. — The Twins won’t get too excited about one live batting practice session and a few bullpens even if there is extra giddyup on the fastball and his off-speed pitches have bite. But what they’ve seen this spring does give the Twins plenty of hope that Lewis Thorpe has his career back on track.

A year after Thorpe briefly left the team for undisclosed personal reasons, he’s back and looks and sounds as healthy as ever. Having endured a rigorous offseason program geared toward strengthening his legs while also paying attention to mental health, Thorpe has put himself in position to have success after a dreadful 2020 campaign. Although nobody is quite sure what his ceiling looks like, the Twins believe Thorpe, who is 3-3 with a 6.14 ERA in 44 career major-league innings, could experience success at the major-league level now that he understands how to get there.
