Sir David Amess murder live updates: Suspect made appointment to see MP at constituency office – Sky News

Former defence minister Tobias Ellwood has warned the withdrawal from Afghanistan has “energised terrorist groups across the world”.

Discussing the suspected terrorist, he said it’s thought Sir David Amess’ killer was “self-radicalised and operated on his own”.

“We must recognise that when it comes to the security of MPs, Islamic extremism, the threat from it is indeed rising,” he told Sky News.

Mr Ellwood, who served in Afghanistan himself, has called for MPs to temporarily pause their constituency surgeries until a safety review has been conducted.

He said he had been “marred by my own experience”, having lost his brother in bombings in Bali and having tried to save the life of PC Keith Palmer in the Westminster attack.

“I would hate to see a copycat event take place and another situation develop where we see another attack in this way,” Mr Ellwood said.

He added he would not want the suspected terrorist to “win” but “we do need to be responsible”.
