Shaquille O’Neal’s early adoption of Twitter has changed athlete relations forever


I had no idea who Shaquille O’Neal was until the night he got drafted.

I had seen the Michigan Fab Five play. I had seen the Duke Blue Devils and Kentucky Wildcats both look like incredible squads. Christian Laettner’s shot was something still resonating with me as a basketball fan learning about big sports moments.

At 10 years old, I had never seen Shaquille O’Neal until he walked across the stage at the 1992 NBA Draft. Access to athletes, especially college athletes, didn’t exist outside of limited television coverage. Maybe the occasional newspaper featured column, but I wasn’t a big reader at 10. I had never seen LSU basketball on television. I wasn’t following the college game online because that wasn’t a thing obviously. I knew I loved basketball and loved the NBA, but my fandom wasn’t terribly aware of college hoops.
