Shaq’s doubts notwithstanding, Donovan Mitchell is the star Jazz need him to be


On Thursday night, the Utah Jazz defeated the New Orleans Pelicans 129-118 at Vivint Smart Home Arena.

The Jazz improved to 11-4 with the victory. They are on a league-high seven-game winning streak. They moved into the second-place spot in the Western Conference. They rebounded from a 16-point first-half deficit to sweep a team that started the game with purpose, poise and explosion.

And by the time the final buzzer sounded, nobody was talking about the actual basketball game.

“Aight.”

That was Donovan Mitchell’s reaction to TNT analyst Shaquille O’Neal, who disparaged Mitchell’s game at halftime, saying the Jazz star would have to be a second or third option on a championship team. In the postgame interview, Shaq told Mitchell he said he didn’t think he had what it took.
