Seventy-eight minutes watching the sublime James Rodriguez


James Rodriguez made his exit from the Goodison Park pitch and headed straight for Carlo Ancelotti.

A high five, warm hug and pause for a chat with the man who had convinced him to swap Madrid for Merseyside, all played out to the soundtrack of rapturous applause from the Everton bench. The final sequence of a quite brilliant home debut.

This week’s headlines went to another 29-year-old former Bayern Munich midfielder following Thiago Alcantara’s move to Liverpool. But James has a way of ensuring the limelight is very often fixed solely on him.

More importantly, perhaps, he has a point to prove too — and is wasting no time in making it.

The Colombian, quite evidently, knows how to make things happen. It has always been this way for the Cucuta native who made his professional debut at 14, won the World Cup Golden Boot in 2014 and also took in the bright lights of the Bernabeu on a journey to becoming a national icon.
