Sean McDermott’s questionable lineup decisions and other final Bills thoughts


After re-watching the Bills’ 26-17 loss to the Chiefs, poring through the stats and talking to coaches on Tuesday, here are our final thoughts from the Week 6 loss.

1. Clyde Edwards-Helaire faced no resistance against Buffalo’s defense. According to NextGen Stats, Edwards-Helaire faced six or fewer defenders in the box on 18 of his 26 carries. The Bills didn’t have eight or more defenders in the box on any of Edwards-Helaire’s runs. Leslie Frazier said the Bills only considered bringing more defenders into the box toward the end of the game, but the game plan was clearly to sit back and sell out to stop Kansas City’s passing game.

That’s a fine strategy, but you can’t get blown off the ball the way the Bills did. The Bills dedicate more money to their defensive line than any other team in football. That group should be able to hold its own better than it did, even without the help of added defenders in the box.
