Scouting report: How the Celtics can neutralize Miami’s new-look offense


Death by 1,000 back cuts. It’s an apt description of Miami’s refined playoff offense, which has taken on the Steve Kerr model from Golden State and applied it to maximize Bam Adebayo’s emergence as a playmaking hub.

The concept was first coined by The Athletic’s Anthony Slater in 2018 and revived more recently by our Dave DuFour. It encapsulates the slow bloodletting of infinite back cuts, dancing behind the screen and every little action that slowly chips away at a defense’s structural integrity. The Heat do not run plays with a primary action and options. They are in a constant flow state of branching out from the ball, creating so many avenues to pursue that it’s hard to differentiate their play sets.
