Scott Brooks, Wizards part ways after five seasons; new coach needs to be a ‘great communicator’


The situation in D.C. today isn’t too different from one the last time Scott Brooks was out of a job.

His most supportive advocate, Russell Westbrook, is anchoring the offense. And an All-NBA scoring machine is one year away from free agency with his franchise determined to keep him.

When the Thunder fired Brooks in 2015, it was Kevin Durant who was entering a contract year. This time — with the Wizards announcing Wednesday they and Brooks, whose contract expires at the end of the 2020-21 season, had “parted ways” — it’s Bradley Beal. And now, Washington will search for a coach who is appropriate for either direction the team could trend in the next year.

The Wizards want to build around Beal, as general manager Tommy Sheppard has repeated for years.
