Schitt’s Creek Makes Historic 2020 Emmys Sweep With Nine Awards

Schitt’s Creek is going out with a bang. The beloved Canadian sitcom, created by and starring the father-and-son team of Eugene and Dan Levy, swept the 2020 Emmys tonight with eight awards for its sixth and final season.

During the virtual ceremony hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, the show took home the honor of Outstanding Comedy Series, beating out The Good Place, Insecure, The Kominsky Method, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Dead to Me, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and What We Do in the Shadows

Eugene Levy also won the award for Best Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, while Dan nabbed Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. Catherine O’Hara took the category for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, and Annie Murphy earned the trophy for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.

The wins were the actors first in the categories. This year marked the first nominations for Murphy and Dan Levy, while Eugene Levy and O’Hara, beloved comedy veterans, were each nominated in 2019.

Dan Levy’s trophy was a major victory for both LGBTQ+ actors and representation. His character, David Rose, was one of the only pansexual men to appear on a major TV network, and the way that his multisexual identity was depicted on Schitt’s Creek has been lauded among critics.

“I did want to play with people’s expectations a bit,” Levy told them. in 2019. “David is flamboyant and I knew people would assume he was gay, so I wanted to subvert that and show that you can’t always judge a book by its cover.”

The younger Levy also won awards for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series and Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series, both for series finale (“Happy Ending”).

Schitt’s Creek was nominated in 15 categories total this year in total, and won in every single major category, a record-breaking sweep that marked the first time in the history of the Emmys that a show has taken home all four acting awards.
