Saturday Takeaways: Who’s the real No. 2? Cincinnati, Oklahoma, Alabama and more are getting their cases together

Five takeaways and much more from Week 7 of the college football season, which delivered drama in all sorts of strange and amusing ways.

So … who’s No. 2?

Another week, another top-five upset. If you weren’t the biggest believer in No. 2 Iowa, your skepticism was validated on Saturday afternoon when Purdue took it to the Hawkeyes in a 24-7 stunner in Iowa City.

David Bell was absolutely unstoppable for Purdue, putting up 240 receiving yards and a score on 11 catches in a dominant effort against one of the best defenses in the country. George Karlaftis was a big problem, too, in his relentless pressure of Iowa’s offense. When your best players give their best performances like those two did, special feats are possible.

But this game was also decided by Iowa’s nonthreatening offense. When the Hawkeyes got down by 10 early in the third quarter, we finally saw what it would look like if they had to throw their way back into a game. And it wasn’t great. In the second half, Spencer Petras went 11 of 19 passing for 102 yards and tossed three interceptions while Tyler Goodson only got two carries for 4 yards.
