Sarah McBride, America’s First Trans State Senator, Shuts Down Transphobic Troll in Three Words

Delaware state Senator-elect Sarah McBride delivered a master class in responding to transphobic trolls this week.

McBride, who became the first transgender person to be seated to a state Senate in November when she defeated her Republican opponent by nearly 47 points, shared a screenshot on Tuesday of a recent text she had received. In the message, an unidentified individual reached out to the 30-year-old Democrat to inquire about her gender (which is really none of their business in the first place!).

“I am confused,” the sender asked, “are you a boy or a girl?”

A longtime spokesperson for the Human Rights Campaign, McBride handled the situation with poise, aplomb, and a heaping helping of no-f**ks-given attitude. “I’m a senator,” she responded.

McBride was widely applauded on Twitter after posting a photo of the exchange and adding: “Hope that clears things up.” Openly gay Pennsylvania Rep. Brian Sims called the tweet “everything,” and clearly the internet agreed, with the post racking up nearly 500,000 likes and 40,000 retweets and quote tweets in just the past 24 hours.

As is often the case when a tweet goes massively viral, some of the comments are almost as good as the original post. After comedian Patton Oswalt retweeted McBride’s post, a follower replied with an illustration perfectly breaking down how ridiculous these conversations are: When a butterfly introduces themselves as such, a cartoon snail responds, “Hello, caterpillar. You are a caterpillar.”

Some observers noted that if someone was confused about McBride’s gender, they could literally just google it, while one individual committed to the bit by joking that McBride goes by “sen/ator” pronouns. A Twitter user with a truly great handle, The Gothman Prophecies, summarized the conversation as such: “‘Okay but what’s in your pants?’ ‘Progress.’”
