Sami Niku’s signing creates an eight-headed monster for Winnipeg’s defence corps


Sami Niku signed a two-year contract on Thursday, paying him $700,000 this season and $750,000 in 2021-22. On the surface, this is a straightforward contract at the league minimum salary which leaves the Jets with just one player — Jack Roslovic — to sign before next season starts.

In practice, Niku’s signing creates an eight-headed monster on Winnipeg’s defence corps that needs to be addressed.

Winnipeg already has seven veterans in Josh Morrissey, Dylan DeMelo, Derek Forbort, Neal Pionk, Nathan Beaulieu, Tucker Poolman, and Luca Sbisa on the roster. The Jets have two prospects in Dylan Samberg and Ville Heinola who are younger than Niku is and who also project to have a bigger impact.

But everything about Niku’s situation says that he’s an NHL player. His contract is a one-way deal, meaning that he’ll get paid in full whether he plays in the NHL or for the Moose.
