Sam Smith and Joey King Trade Dating App Catfishing Horror Stories

When it comes to dating, celebrities are just like us — well, sort of, anyway. For Sam Smith, the popular dating apps have been more difficult than the singer initially imagined, and it’s not because they’re always swiping right.

As noted by ET Canada, Sam virtually visited with Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live and discussed their dating app woes. “I’m still single. I’m on the frontline with all the single people still and it’s been difficult … I’ve gone on all the apps and stuff,” they told Andy. “I took your advice. I joined this dating site called Hinge in the U.K. and they chucked me off of it after one night cause they thought I was a catfish pretending to be me.”

Oh no! According to Andy, the same thing happened to him, but he nudged Sam in Tinder’s direction. “That same thing has happened to me on dating apps but that’s why I wanted you to join Tinder because I have someone who can get you on there and verify you,” the host said.

Joey King, who was also appearing on WWHL that night, chimed in with her own catfishing tale. “By the way though, someone has used my face and photos as catfish for Tinder,” she said. “A friend of mine who was on Tinder sent me a screenshot of someone who was using my pictures.” Catfishing is extremely common on dating apps, with some users stealing pics not just from celebrities, but strangers online to pose as a different person.

Sam, if you’re reading this, maybe it’s time to put in an application with Raya, the most celeb-friendly of the dating apps, or listen to your pal Andy and get that blue check mark on Tinder so prospective loves will know it’s really you! And as for Joey, well, this sounds like a job for the crew behind MTV’s Catfish.
