Russell Westbrook’s shooting slump continues to prove costly: ‘You’re as cold as ice’

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — With every miss, the sound effect seemingly grew louder and louder across the arena.

You’re as cold as ice!

The Sacramento Kings’ game operations recently decided to pick an opposing player before each matchup to troll throughout the game. Against the Lakers, their target was Russell Westbrook, who had been struggling in his past three games amid a rocky first season in Los Angeles.

This was on the Kings’ big screen before the game.

When Westbrook was introduced in the starting lineup, the Kings played the sound: “You’re as cold as ice!” Then again after Westbrook bricked a layup in the opening minutes. And then again. And then again. And again.

The trolling continued throughout the Lakers’ 125-116 loss to the Kings at the Golden 1 Center on Wednesday night.

Ice cold!

Ice, ice baby!

Westbrook validated the Kings’ jokes, scoring eight points due to a dismal 2-of-14 shooting performance. He wasn’t the deciding factor in the Lakers’ loss — he was one of several factors, including, most notably, the Lakers’ defense, which allowed 70 points in the paint and 23 fastbreak points — but his misses and his questionable shot selection appeared to halt Los Angeles’ momentum at pivotal moments of the game.

Afterward, Westbrook didn’t mince words when asked about his four-game shooting slump, in which he’s shot just 15 of 59 (25.4 percent).

“Man, who you telling?” Westbrook said. “I can’t make a fucking shot, boy.
