Running the New York City Marathon at Age Eighty-Six

00:02

[funky guitar music]

00:10

[energetic drumbeat]

00:13

I run every day ten miles.

00:15

If I come home, I only run eight miles or nine miles,

00:19

I come back and I’m depressed.

00:21

I do my ten miles, I come back happy.

00:25

[speaks foreign language]

00:27

I know how long I have to go,

00:28

I know I got a finish line.

00:30

Nothing’s gonna stop me.

00:33

Unless a something tragic.

00:35

My body, maybe a heart attack or a stroke or whatever.

00:38

I don’t think I gonna have that.

00:40

Not while you’re running.

00:43

Who the hell at my age is still running at 86?

00:47

I’m gonna do the marathon,

00:49

and I’m gonna be the oldest,

00:50

and I’m gonna love it.

00:54

[swingy jazz guitar music]

00:57

I started when I was about 60 years old,

00:59

when I did the marathon.

01:00

So I started late, that’s why I don’t have that many.

01:03

I only have 16 marathons.

01:15

It’s nice to be the oldest,

01:17

because there’s no more competition.

01:24

And I like that because it give me a certain respect.

01:30

Yeah, I’m not a celebrity,

01:31

but I enjoy being recognized.

01:33

[camera shutters clicking]

01:34

Yeah, I do always wear makeup

01:35

because we are being photographed a lot.

01:37

So you don’t wanna look like an old bag [laughs].

01:43

Getting old, it’s a little bit genetic.

01:46

I have a sister, she’s 95.

01:51

They’re still all around.

01:52

They’re not runners, but they’re still alive.

01:54

I have to keep my knees.

01:56

That’s why I cannot run like her any more.

01:59

[Interviewer] What do you think is

02:00

the most exciting thing about watching her run?

02:10

I don’t even look at them any more,

02:12

They’re gonna get dusty.

02:13

And then I have to clean.

02:15

Well, no thank you.

02:16

You think I gonna look at that, forget it.

02:19

[Interviewer] Does it make you think

02:20

about everything you’ve accomplished?

02:22

Of course! Ready, begin.

02:30

and every day I watched him on TV,

02:33

and also I work at the airport.

02:36

And one person said, I just finished a marathon.

02:40

I said, Oh, I could never be like those.

02:42

They’re superhuman.

02:44

Gee, wait a minute.

02:46

If he could do, so can I.

02:48

[energetic jazz music]

02:52

My first marathon was my best in my life.

02:56

It was so beautiful.

02:58

And everybody was so enthusiastic,

03:03

All the people applauded,

03:05

everybody want to give you high five.

03:08

[speaking foreign language]

03:15

And let’s take the finish line,

03:17

I’m gonna say Bravo!

03:20

[intense jazz fusion music]

03:37

If I do the marathon, then back come in the house.

03:41

Yeah, the day after I run again.

03:43

It doesn’t bother me.

03:44

I don’t feel sore, my legs, nothing, nowhere.

03:46

Because my legs are used to it.

03:49

I don’t feel 86, I feel I’m 36.

03:52

I could still wear my bikini when I was 16 years old.

03:55

Who can wear bikini at 86?

04:01

[Interviewer] What do you think is the hardest thing

04:03

about getting older?

04:06

Not feeling old, looking old.

04:08

Yeah, the wrinkles.

04:09

Oh, shit, I hate that.

04:10

But you can keep your body younger than your face!

04:19

I miss my husband dearly. [music turns melancholy]

04:21

He ran also every day.

04:23

He died, how do you call, [speaking foreign language].

04:28

He was 89 years old.

04:33

because it kept my sanity,

04:35

mentally and physically.

04:37

You know what I missed the most when he died?

04:45

Now I need a nice boyfriend, a guy,

04:47

but all the guys, they’re all kaput.

04:49

And the rest are taken.

04:52

You should be with the men now.

04:54

This is a good spot to pick somebody up.

05:00

No, I don’t want a toy boy, no thank you.

05:03

Little bit too young for me [laughs].

05:06

Stay all alone and my pussy cat, that’s it.

05:14

I try to be friend today,

05:15

but nowadays he keeps his distance

05:17

because I don’t think he feels equal to me, physically.

05:21

Even all my girlfriends, they don’t want

05:22

to be friend any more

05:24

because I’m too prominent for them.

05:26

So actually I’m all alone, and I’m lonely.

05:30

You’ll never see me sitting on the couch

05:32

and feel sorry for myself.

05:34

I put on my sneakers and I hit the road.

05:37

I always come back very happy.

05:42

[energetic classical music]

05:53

Every time I have a run in the city:

05:55

Ginette Bedard, [speaks foreign language].

05:59

[Announcer] Here she comes, everyone.

06:13

Lot of people tell me,

06:20

There’s no reason why they shouldn’t be the same.

06:24

You are what you do to your life.

06:26

[speaking foreign language]

06:27

of discipline, determination, pride,

06:32

a little bit of everything.

06:35

[speaks foreign language], life is good.

06:39

and I’m gonna go and have a croissant and a cappuccino.

06:43

[energetic classical music]
