Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital will host a Workshop on Equine Neurologic Diseases, an educational seminar for veterinarians and residents on August 9 through 11 at the Lexington campus on Georgetown Road.
The workshop will be composed of lectures, demonstrations and hands-on wet labs by some of the equine industry’s most notable members. Doctors of internal medicine, sports medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, and surgeons will be leading the workshop. Guest speakers include doctors Barrie Grant, surgical consultant; Yvette Nout-Lomas, Kevin Haussler and Sherry Johnson of Colorado State University; Amy Johnson of the University of Pennsylvania; Jennifer Janes, University of Kentucky; Jonathan Anderson, Malton, England; and doctors Stephen Reed, Katie Garrett and Brett Woodie of Rood & Riddle.
The three-day course will focus on understanding the basic principles of anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology of many important neurologic diseases of horses and will feature demonstrations of CT myelograms and a ventral stabilization surgery or “basket” surgery. Some topics covered in the workshop are EDM, EPM and cervical vertebral stenotic myelopathy as well as other vertebral problems in horses; rehabilitation, equine chiropractic and the use of imaging in diagnosing vertebral problems will also be covered.
“We have anticipated teaching this or a similar course for several years and hope to establish an annual or semi-annual meeting to help residents prepare for specialty boards,” said Dr. Stephen Reed of Rood & Riddle.
