Washington and ex-Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera have reportedly agreed to a five-year contract to make him the team’s new head coach, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Both sides were connected heavily over the weekend, leading to Rivera visiting the team on Monday. The final meetings clearly went well as the veteran coach is set to become the strong voice and stability the organization has needed for years.
It took less than a month for Rivera to find another coaching job after being fired by the Panthers. The 57-year-old coach helped lead Carolina to a 76-63-1 record, four playoff seasons and one Super Bowl appearance. He replaces Jay Gruden, who finished with a 35-49-1 record in Washington.
Rivera, a defensive-minded coach, should help revitalize a defense with some young talent, and Washington should look to add more talent this offseason for Rivera to utilize. Now fans wait to see who he hires as his offensive coordinator and who replaces Bruce Allen to run football operations.
