Roger Federer sets new ATP record after impressive Swiss Indoors win over Tsitsipas

Roger Federer has achieved 50 wins in an ATP season for a record 16th time in his career after beating Stefanos Tsitsipas to reach the final of the Swiss Indoors in Basel.

Federer loves playing at his hometown tournament and he went into the semi-final with fully fresh legs after receiving a walkover on Friday due to a Stan Wawrinka injury.

And the Swiss began the match ominously, earning himself five break points before finally breaking Tsitsipas on the sixth.

That put Federer in control of the match and he never looked back from that moment as he won the first set 6-4.

The Swiss then broke Tsitsipas in the opening game of the second set to compound matters for the young Greek.

Federer would serve for the match at 5-4 and would have to save the first break point against him before completing an impressive 6-4 6-4 win.

It means Federer hit 50 wins for the 16th season of his career and extended his lead over Jimmy Connors, who finished on 14.

World no 1 Novak Djokovic has hit the half-century on 11 occasions and can move to 12 next week at the Paris Masters next week.

While Rafael Nadal is currently on 10 seasons but needs just two wins in Paris to move to 11.

By defeating Tsitsipas, Federer set a number of new landmarks for his career.

It was his 23rd consecutive win in Basel and he will play in the 15th final at the tournament, the 13th in a row.

The final will be his 157 tour-level final while his opponent Alex de Minaur has played just 107 matches in his career.
