“Not just to Roger, because the pace of change at the top of the men’s game has been rapid this year, and it will have taken Federer, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal by surprise, if for different reasons.”

Federer has since pulled out of the Tokyo Olympics as he continues to look after his body to maximise his future potential.

The tennis legend took to social media to explain his decision.

He explained: “During the grass-court season, I unfortunately experienced a setback with my knee, and have accepted that I must withdraw from the Tokyo Olympic Games.
