Roger Federer puts ATP Finals appearance in jeopardy with South American tour plans

The US Open presents the final Grand Slam of the year and Federer will be hoping to add to his first title there since 2008.

But while there are no more Grand Slams in the year after the US Open, the real curtain closer of the season is the ATP Finals.

This is the penultimate year the ATP Finals will be held in London, having hosted the event since 2009.

Turin will become the new temporary home of the tournament from 2021.

The world’s best male tennis stars from the calendar year take to the courts for the week-long event in the middle of November, with Federer holding the record for most singles titles with six.

However, the 37-year-old has reportedly put plans in place that could jeopardise his appearance in London.

According to Argentinian journalist Sebastian Torok, who reports Federer is planning a tour of South America in November.

The report states Federer will begin the tour with an exhibition match in Chile on November 18th, the day after the final of the ATP Finals.

Then he will travel to Argentina where a date hasn’t been confirmed before going to Mexico on the 23rd and potentially Colombia to finish it off.

Federer hasn’t played in Argentina for seven years, with his one and only appearance in the country being back in 2012 where he played two matches against Juan Martin del Potro.

Alexander Zverev or Dominic Thiem are said to be his most likely opponent in Argentina.

Zverev has repeatedly spoken out against the Davis Cup Finals and won’t be representing Germany while Austria failed to qualify for the tournament.

Although ticket information is currently unavailable, the report goes on to say that some fans will have the opportunity to be a “super vip” ticket, which will be labelled the “Roger Experience”.

The “experience” will allow the ticket holder to have exclusive benefits such as being in close proximity to the 20-time Grand Slam champion.

Given the fact the matches will just be exhibition-style, it is feasible that Federer could travel immediately after the ATP Finals.
