Denis Shapovalov believes it is impossible to pick between Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic as to who is the greatest of all time in men’s tennis. All three have now won 20 Grand Slams with Djokovic likely to move ahead in the coming months.
Shapovalov, 22, lost to Djokovic at Wimbledon as the Serbian went on to win the tournament.
But the Canadian can’t pick the best and is very happy to be part of the exciting generation of men’s tennis which includes the three.
Djokovic has won the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon this year and could complete a calendar Grand Slam with a US Open victory later this year.
He is also looking for an Olympic gold medal in Tokyo.
“It is impossible to name a GOAT. It is truly a personal matter that concerns each individual,” Shapovalov said.
“So-and-so could just look at the stats, another could judge how much of a champion this player was, how he performed as a person or on the courts.
“All three of them (Djokovic, Nadal and Federer) are all very unique in their own way.
“It’s just a super fun generation to be a part of, and definitely, something like that will never happen again, in history I think.
“It’s just super fun to see what the three of them are doing.”
Meanwhile, Federer pulled out of the Olympics due to an injury he suffered before Wimbledon.
He explained: “During the grass-court season, I unfortunately experienced a setback with my knee, and have accepted that I must withdraw from the Tokyo Olympic Games.
“I am greatly disappointed, as it has been an honour and highlight of my career each time I have represented Switzerland.
“I have already begun rehabilitation in the hopes of returning to the tour later this summer.
