Roger Federer makes Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic ‘not normal’ claim at US Open

Roger Federer believes the Next Gen stars are banging on the Grand Slam door and it will soon become their time to shine.

The Swiss star claims it is “not normal” for himself, Nadal and Djokovic to have dominated the men’s game for so long.

The trio have amassed 54 Grand Slam titles between them and look set to extend that at the US Open over the next fortnight.

And Federer does not think it is an issue that the younger players have not been able to stamp their mark on the major events.

“I don’t think it s a problem,” Federer said at his pre-US Open press conference.

“Now that Novak, Rafa and me are healthy again, Andy [Murray] also coming back again, it has just made it much harder for young guys to come through.

“They are knocking on the door big time now so I think that’s very encouraging for those who want to see somebody else win.

“I think also Novak’s domination and Rafa’s domination are also not normal for a game of tennis.

“We know close the margins are, if you win 55 or 60 per cent of the points in a match you are dominating. It’s that close.

“I think there is going to be chances moving forward but it is not surprising with the type of tennis they have been playing in recent years.

“Stan [Wawrinka] coming up, he was very strong when he won that.

“It seems like the same guys are the favourites this time around.”

Federer has been placed in the same half of the US Open draw as world No 1 Djokovic so they could meet in the semi-finals.

Nadal will be the most pleased of the trio as he cannot meet his two biggest rivals until the final.

But the Spaniard could still meet his clay nemesis Dominic Them in the last four.
