Roger Federer lays down 2020 priorities as clay remains on schedule with Olympic Games

Roger Federer will return to clay next year as he bids to dethrone Rafael Nadal for one final time before his retirement.

The Swiss star had a three-year absence from Roland Garros until he returned to action this year.

And the 38-year-old impressed as he stormed to the semi-finals, losing out 12-time champion Nadal.

However, success on the Parisian red dirt is not a top priority in a year in which the Tokyo Olympic Games clogs up the schedule.

Federer was asked during his South American exhibition tour if he would rather win the title at the French Open, Wimbledon or the Olympic gold medal.

“I would be happy with either one of those,” he replied.

“If I knew I would win one more and one of those would be those three, I would be a happy man.

“It would be worth it to stay on the tour. But maybe the gold or Wimbledon, I’m not sure.”

Federer has won all of the major titles tennis has to offer besides the gold medal at the Olympics.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion came closest in 2012 where he lost to Andy Murray in the final.

But the hectic schedule will also include another appearance at Roland Garros next year and Federer has explained why he chose to try and end Nadal’s reign.

“This year when I came back and the decision was ‘Shall I play the clay?’ I told everybody honestly I can’t not play the clay season for a third year,” he said.

“I have to play, I need it. I did play it and I had a great time.

“I will probably not play before the French Open but I will play the French Open so it’s very excited.”

Federer will kick-off his 2020 campaign at the Australian Open in January after pulling out of the inaugural ATP Cup.

Switzerland were consequently removed from the event as Federer want to spend more time with his family before returning to action.
