Roger Federer fires warning to Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic at Australian Open

Roger Federer’s main priority in 2020 is to win another Grand Slam title. The Swiss star holds the men’s record with 20, one more than his closest challenger Nadal.

Djokovic has won four fewer Grand Slam titles than Federer but the 38-year-old’s reign at the top of the sport is expected to come under huge threat this year.

The top two players in the world are the favourites to win the Australian Open over the next fortnight.

But Federer is confident he can put up a strong fight after getting one over his rivals at major tournaments last year.

“If I’m honest, I would like to finally get a big title again,” Federer told Swiss publication Blick.

“I was so close last season. With the wins against Novak Djokovic in the ATP Finals and Rafael Nadal in Wimbledon – there I was only one point away from the 21st Grand Slam title.

“I showed my toughest rivals that I can beat them so everything is absolutely possible.

“But I have to train hard for what I do, and I’ve done that in the past few weeks.”

Federer gets his Australian Open campaign underway against American Steve Johnson on Monday.

And he knows he will have to be on top form from the off, especially as he has not played a competitive match since November.

“No, I’m excited to play Steve. He’s a good guy. I think with his old-school playing – big forehand, slice backhand, good serve – I think it’s going to be a nice match for me, as well.”

Meanwhile, Federer also discussed playing tennis with his four children.

“They don’t always listen to me,” he explained. “I play with them sometimes. I do like to play with them, yeah. But I am not the biggest fan of the dad giving them all the advice.

“For that I think they got to listen to the coach. I’ve had that problem before, where I told them some things, and they said, Well, my coach told me differently.

“I told them, There you go. Listen to the coach. Don’t listen to me. But at least listen to one of us. I’m happy they play a bit of tennis, yeah.”
