Roger Federer explains key to beating Alex de Minaur and winning Swiss Indoors final

Roger Federer says coming through the opening game of the Swiss Indoors final was crucial to his win over Alex de Minaur.

Federer and De Minaur were meeting each other for the first time and serving first in the match, the Swiss made a fast start as he raced to 40-0.

Three errors in a row allowed De Minaur back into the game and he forced Federer to hit a world-class volley to avoid giving the Australian a break point.

But from that point, Federer took charge of the match.

Federer broke De Minaur twice in both sets to complete a routine 6-2 6-2 win and achieved his 10th title in Basel.

And speaking after the match, Federer admitted surviving the first game was the catalyst for him to go on and make history at his home tournament.

He said: “I had 40-0 and he got back into the game.

“I think if I get broken that is obviously a tough one. After that I think it was important for me to hold serve to show I could hold my serve easier.

“I was able to do that and I think I kept on rolling.”

Victory for Federer improved his record to 75-9 at the tournament and made it 24 wins in a row.

And unsurprisingly, he was delighted to come away with the title.

He said: “[I’m] very happy. Couldn’t be more happy actually.

“Feel also very good and very fresh. What a great tournament it has been for me always but particularly the last few times I have been here now.

“It has always been finals and always been wins.”
