Roger Federer’s long-term coach Severin Luthi insists the 2020 Olympics are not a goal for the tennis legend.
The 38-year-old was absent from the Swiss Davis Cup team that has tried to cope without him and Stan Wawrinka in the last four years.
Switzerland lost to Slovakia in a Group I clash and that means it is impossible for them to play in the revamped Davis Cup Finals until 2021 at the earliest.
Federer’s absence may affect his eligibility for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
Luthi, the captain of the Swiss Davis Cup team, insists that a final decision has yet to be made about next year’s Tokyo Olympics.
The Swiss coach claims it is therefore still possible that the world No 3 will be in action next summer in Japan.
However, the Olympics are not yet a top priority for the 20-time Grand Slam champion.
Luthi said: “It’s possible but it’s not a goal.
“He will leave it open a little bit.
“I don’t know how it works with (Olympic) wildcards.
“They used to give them to the small countries, but I think if he said he wanted to play….”
Federer has won 20 Grand Slam singles titles throughout his glittering 21-year career, which is the most in history by a male tennis player.
The Basel-born star also held the world No1 spot for a record total of 310 weeks.
He has beaten some of the all-time best including Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray.
