Roger Federer challenges Laver Cup team-mates to drinking competition during celebrations

Roger Federer planned to drink until he could drink no more after Team Europe won the Laver Cup for a third year in a row.

At 38 years old Federer is very a much a family man and rarely gets the chance to blow off steam because of the gruelling ATP calendar.

But he planned to take the opportunity last night with both hands as he sipped champagne while detailing what the evening had in store.

“It is a closed little situation unfortunately and it will not be opened up,” Federer said of the afterparty.

“We are going to have a dinner and for those who have even more stamina left it is going to be a last man standing competition tonight.

“I don’t think I’m going to be the winner of that competition but I’ll give it a go.”

Federer created the Laver Cup three years ago and the tournament has grown from strength to strength with every edition.

“What a weekend it has been,” Federer said in his victory speech.

“The idea of the concept was trying to bring tennis to the people.

“Make it fun, make it a weekend maybe which is unforgettable and just something very special. And I felt it was.

“I can’t thank the city of Geneva enough and all the players who fought their heart out.

“I think it’s been absolutely incredible. Congratulations Team World for an unbelievable fight.

“Can’t wait for the next one in Boston. So many emotions. It’s been an unbelievable rollercoaster.

“This concludes a dream weekend for me to be playing in Switzerland.

“Thank you for all the noise you’ve made. I’ve loved every moment.”
