Roger Federer and wife Mirka donate £857,000 to coronavirus battle in huge gesture

Roger Federer and wife Mirka have generously donated £857,000 (Fr. 1million) to Swiss families affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

Global sport has been suspended as the majority of countries have been placed on lockdown in an attempt to stop the spread of the killer virus.

Tennis legend Federer has played his part in trying to help those affected by offering a large financial sum in hope of helping those worse off than him.

“These are challenging times for everyone and nobody should be left behind,” Federer wrote on Instagram.

“Mirka and I have personally decided to donate one million Swiss Francs for the most vulnerable families in Switzerland.

“Our contribution is just a start. We hope that others might join in supporting more families in need.

“Together we can overcome this crisis! Stay healthy!”

The ATP tour has been suspended since Indian Wells was called off just days before the event was due to take place.

Federer did not travel to America for the scheduled Sunshine Double as he knee surgery.

It proved to be a smart decision as he has not missed out on any tournaments.

The world No 4 had planned to skip the clay season so he would be fully fit for his preferred grass campaign.

However, it is now unclear when he or the remaining ATP players will be allowed to return to action.

Last week Federer took to Instagram to explain the precautions he was taking to avoid catching coronavirus.

“I’m also staying home and I haven’t been shaking anybody’s hands for quite some time now,” the 20-time Grand Slam winner said.

“Obviously, I wash my hands very frequently as we’re supposed to. I believe helping each other is more important now than ever. Especially because we want to help the older generation.

“They’re the ones at highest risk and we need to help them by keeping a distance of two metres and not shake hands.

“It’s really important to take these rules seriously. Very very seriously.

“Eventually, we could all be in quarantine and not be able to leave the house anymore so I really hope all of us take it very seriously.”
