Rockets’ Stephen Silas unplugged: On challenging start to tenure and putting his ‘stamp’ on Houston



Back when Stephen Silas was a regular on the national stage in Dec. 2020, during those dysfunctional Houston Rockets days when James Harden embarked on a party tour through Atlanta and Las Vegas during training camp as a way to force his way out, it was hard not to feel some sympathy for the first-year head coach.

He had worked for two decades toward this hoops dream, gaining league-wide respect as an assistant coach for seven different teams while gaining the trust of stars like Steph Curry, Luka Dončić and so many others along the way. From Charlotte to New Orleans, Cleveland, Washington, Golden State, Charlotte (again) and Dallas, the son of the great Paul Silas had worked his way out of his father’s shadow long before he was pegged for the Rockets job. And then, not long after Harden and Russell Westbrook (pre-Washington trade) had vouched for him in the hiring process that was led by an executive (Daryl Morey) who had since left the organization (before resurfacing in Philadelphia), he was being asked to help clean a mess he played no part in creating.
